Delphix 6.0 and 6.0.2 Release Preview

FWD View are committed to continually expanding our existing knowledge of current technologies and of seeking out newer ones. And, with Delphix being a major partner, the technical team here have been privileged enough to get a fantastic insight into the latest releases of Delphix – (that is Delphix 6.0.0 and Delphix 6.0.2) – giving us the opportunity to highlight to you, the new features that will be especially of interest to our financial services customers

Of course, there are numerous other improvements and updates in the two bundles but I have highlighted the most advantageous below:

Central Management

Delphix Central Management is a SaaS-based control point for automating, controlling and monitoring Delphix Virtualisation and Masking Engines. This is a much-requested feature and been on the roadmap for a while. Automating Delphix becomes key when you roll out within an Enterprise. Our technical team have started to build this integration into our processes and is something customers are looking forward to leveraging.

Below is an example of where Central Management (dataservices.delphix.com) fits within your Delphix deployment:

Google Cloud Support

Delphix now supports running in Google Cloud Platform for existing supported databases. We see Google Cloud used extensively with Analytics, and this is a nice way for Delphix to extend their use case around getting your data from on-prem to your cloud-based analytics platforms.

Extended Connectors

Extended Connectors is a new feature that allows you to upload additional JDBC Drivers to the Delphix Masking engine. This enables masking data sources that are not natively supported by Delphix Masking. A number of our customers use the Masking engine without the Virtualisation component. This will enable them to cover more of their infrastructure than ever before.

SQL Server CDC Support

Delphix have expanded their support for SQL Server databases using Change Data Capture (CDC), a SQL Server feature that captures all the change information that is applied to the databases and stores it in change tables. Now, users will have the ability to preserve CDC data and enable CDC for SQL Server VDBs.

Windows Authentication

A major policy that we see regularly is that SQL Security only allow Windows Authentication. With Delphix 6.0.2 Customers will be able to link SQL Server Databases with using only a Windows OS User, rather than provide both a database user and a windows user to ingest data. This simplifies SQL Server deployments, which I am all for!

Smart Failover

Simplifying the failover process by automating object conflict resolution via smart failover will be part of this update. Manually managing failover sometimes can be a positive; ensuring control. However, some of the more Enterprise customers need to have the ability to automate this failover, with sufficient checks. This strengthens the direction Delphix is already going with the Central Management feature detailed above.

What have we left out?

The eagle eyed of you may have noticed we have left out one major feature the Virtualization SDK. The Delphix engine has built-in support for interfacing with certain types of datasets, such as Oracle, SQL Server and ASE. For non-supported databases the Virtualization SDK enables developers to create a plugin to use your dataset type with Delphix. This deserves its own dedicated blog to discuss the approaches, features and process required. I am busy writing this and will post it shortly. Safe to say it is a ground-breaking new feature. Something the Developers at FWD View are busy playing with and coming up with some fantastic new features our customers will love.
